The Velma-Alma Comets sealed the Regional Championship game by winning against Allen 62-54 this past Saturday as they roared past the Mustangs.
In the first quarter, the Comets netted the first two buckets of the game from Tyler Stewart and Jace Saville before a three from Allen cut the game to a one point difference.
After a couple of buckets from the Comets, Allen put it back to one point at 8-7 when Saville hit his first three of the game to bring the Comets’ lead to 11-7 over Allen in the first quarter.
Tristan Wainscott got another three for the Comets to make it 14-7 while Saville banked his second three to lead 17-10 midway through the first quarter.
His third three came at the end of the first quarter as the Comets led 25-12 over Allen. The team hoped to continue the hot streak in the second quarter.
Cooper Keck made the first bucket of the second quarter after a few points scored by Allen and the next three buckets came from Austin Hunt to lead 30-17 over Allen midway through the second quarter.
Stewart then shot a bucket to extend the lead to 32-19 with Crue Garrett making some final points in the second quarter as they led 34-23 at halftime.
Starting the third quarter, Saville shot a bucket to start the scoring for the Comets and then a three bucket from Saville gave them an 11-point lead over the visiting Mustangs.
Saville continued hitting three buckets and the final bucket in the third quarter came from Hunt to lead 49-35 after three quarters of play.
Hunt started the fourth with a bucket for the Comets before Allen managed to put the game within eight points. Then, the next bucket from Velma-alma came from Garrett.
Allen got within three points before Saville hit two free throws to bring it back to five points while the Comets extended the lead to eight with two free throws from Garrett.
Saville and Hunt earned the final points of the game to secure the victory. The team will now go up against a top team in Class A for the Regional Championship game.
Saville led with 31 points while Stewart had 10 and Hunt had nine points with three other players spreading out the points in the game.
Velma-Alma, now 15-5 on the season and No. 10 in Class A, will face Hydro-Eakly, who is No. 2 in Class A and undefeated with a record of 20-0.
The Comets will play at 8 p.m. Feb. 23 at North Rock Creek against Hydro-Eakly and will advance to the area tournament regardless of the result of the game with the sites changing from original location.
Thursday, Feb. 25 games, if Velma-Alma has to play that day, will take place at McLoud High School with the rest of the area tournament taking place at Shawnee High School on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27.
