Velma-Alma clinched a playoff berth with a 36-20 win over Rush Springs on Friday in Velma.

A 250-yard rushing performance by junior Jake Combest helped keep the Comets (6-3, 3-2) on top of the Redskins (2-7, 2-3) even without their two leading rushers, juniors Evan Albertson and Shiloh Womack. Coach Colt Allison said the team held out Womack for precautionary reasons and he will be back for Central high next week. Albertson injured his ankle and had come out after only one rushing attempt Friday.

“He had multiple runs of 25 yards or more, 91 being the longest,” Allison said. “He really picked up the slack  for Shiloh and Evan not being out there.”

Velma-Alma also threw the ball for 158 yards and junior quarterback Andrew McGuire completed 13 of 22 passes.

The Comets were also able to buck the trend of struggling in the second half.

“Our kids needed to have an understanding of what it feels like to finish a game out against a tough well-coached opponent,” Allison said.
