Having already clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2016, the Duncan Lady Demons are now one step closer to a home playoff game with a 3-0 victory over Eisenhower Tuesday evening.
Since their last loss back at the end of March, the Lady Demons have only allowed three goals in their seven game winning streak and notched their third shutout in the last four games.
Duncan’s offense was able to shine despite a very physical game according to Lady Demons head coach Delydia Givens who said it spoke a lot of her team to come out against Eisenhower.
“It was a very physical game but I was very proud of the way the girls responded. They held their composure and didn’t let it get to them mentally,” Givens said. “That says a lot about the maturity of this team. Our defense did a great job of shutting down their offensive attacks.”
Junior midfielder Saniaya Smith was active again for the Lady Demons scoring the hat trick and all three goals in the victory over Eisenhower Tuesday evening.
Part of the reason for Smith scoring the three goals was the ball movement from the team and Givens said the whole game offensive plan was based on the ability to do so.
“We moved the ball well and were able to find Saniaya Smith up top offensively where she was able to outrun the Ike defensive line,” Givens said.
The only two losses of the season were back-to-back against Piedmont and Clinton and with only one of those being district losses, the Lady Demons have a chance to host their first playoff game in the program’s history.
Duncan boys got the honor of hosting the school’s first soccer playoff game last year and for the Lady Demons there is an outside chance that they can win the district with a victory and Piedmont loss.
However, the Lady Demons are in control of hosting a playoff game since they just need a victory over Santa Fe South to clinch at least second place and a host bid.
Givens said that the Duncan Lady Demons soccer team’s best finish is fourth place in district play and she and the team are excited at the prospect of hosting a playoff game.
“It would be an awesome experience to host the first round of playoffs and have the home field advantage,” Givens said. “The highest the girls have ever finished in districts is fourth place.”
Game time for the Lady Demons and Santa Fe South will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Duncan High School with Senior Night festivities to follow after the conclusion of their game.
