Golf can be a family sport — kids from a young age to senior adults can enjoy the game. Gracelynn Nickell said she is ready to join Redlands Community College after staff treated her like family during her visit to the college.
As the senior All-State selection for the 2022 season, Nickell finished her career with a two-day total of 175 and as the only golfer to improve from day one to day two in the Class 5A State Tournament.
During her visit at Redlands, Nickell felt excited to tour the campus and fell in love with the small college atmosphere they provided.
“The coach is super nice. She’s really almost feels like family already and I’ve only met her a few times,” Nickell said. “The girls that I would be playing with are very encouraging and super sweet and things like that. I really liked the small college atmosphere and I don’t really like a lot of people or big towns and things like that. So I prefer to go to somewhere that is a little bit smaller and more like Duncan, it makes me feel a little more like home.”
Her senior season saw the Lady Demons finish fifth overall in Class 5A as a team and in her junior season, they finished as runner-up. Nickell was coached by Josh Harris and Dakota Hicks.
Harris, who coached Nickell for all four years of high school, took pride in seeing the All-State selection improve from her freshman year and is excited to see her as a college athlete.
“I’m very proud of her and glad to see all that hard work pay off. She improved tremendously from when she was a freshman,” Harris said. “Looking forward to watching her play in the All State Tournament and can’t wait to see her play in college. She is going to be missed for sure.”
With her heading to her new school this fall, Nickell loves the fact she will represent one of the most successful programs at Duncan and hopes to make everyone proud.
“It means so much to me honestly to be able to represent this amazing school with everything that everybody through the years has accomplished,” NIckell said. “Dakota Hicks and Josh Harris have really set me up for success in my coming years of playing college.”
After signing with Redlands and getting ready to join their golf team, Nickell said she was proud to have her dad in her corner along the way.
“Both of them have been a big support, but especially my dad. He’s been my biggest supporter through all my five years of playing golf,” Nickell said. “He has really been my biggest supporter out there.”
