FLETCHER — A 6-point win in December didn’t mean much Thursday night in the Area II Regional C semifinals.
The Velma-Alma Lady Comets had knocked off the Amber-Pocasset Lady Panthers earlier this year in a tournament that V-A hosted. Apparently that loss left a bad taste in the Lady Panthers’ mouths, as they downed V-A 47-16 Thursday night.
The bulk of V-A’s scoring came off the bench as freshman Kaitlin Anderson led the Lady Comets with 9 points. Shelby Hays had four points, and Kenzie Cogswell hit a 3-pointer in the second period for V-A’s 16 points.
Velma-Alma didn’t shoot much in the game, taking 30 shots, and made only seven of those attempts. V-A was 1-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Amber-Pocasset had no problems finding the basket, as it jumped out to a 14-2 lead after the first period.
Velma-Alma’s Rindi Alexander was saddled with a technical foul at the 4:26 mark, and Am-Po’s Korie Hargus hit both of the ensuing free throws for a 10-0 edge.
The only Lady Comets’ points came from Anderson at the 1:16 mark. Velma-Alma wouldn’t hit another field goal until Cogswell’s 3 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half of play.
It was 31-5 at the break, and Amber-Pocasset’s Tayler McCrackin and Velma-Alma’s Shelby Hays swapped buckets to open the third, but Am-Po was up 35-7 after Kristin Mays’ bucket with 4:58 left to play in the period.
Anderson converted a 3-point play to trim Am-Po’s lead to 37-10, and she scored her seventh consecutive point to make it 37-14 going into the final period of play.
The Lady Comets face elimination at 6:30 p.m. today in Harrah.
