With two rounds in the books, golfers at the 78th Elks Labor Day Tournament are eyeing each other and the weather as the finals approach today. Rain threatened all day on Sunday, but did not stop the second round. The third round was scheduled to start this morning.

After the second round, there is a two-way tie at the top of the Championship Flight. Duncan’s David Jennings and Ron King take a two shot lead into the third round, both sharing a scorecard with 136 marked on it.

Jennings had a four shot lead going into the day, but slipped from a 64 in the first round to a 72. That fallback allowed King to claw his way back in. King has finished both days with a 68.

“I hit the ball well but didn’t hit the putts,” Jennings said. “I’m happy to be there at the top. Getting off to a fast start will be important.”

Jennings has won the tournament twice, but hasn’t claimed the title since 1990.

Chasing the pair is Kevin Muncrief, who is two shots back. Sam Vordemon and Brian Efner-Moore are four shots back, carding a 140 score after the first two rounds.

There is also a tie atop the A-Flight. This time, three teams come into today’s action with the lead. The team of Mark Campbell and Ron Clark are among those, finishing with after a two-day total of 134. Chris Dickerson and Kevin Lewis join them, along with Micah Russell and Dale Whipple.

The duos of Chris Staats and Christopher Staats, Rann White and Matt Taylor and Mike Zawicki and Wayne Woods all are one shot back in the tournament.

Separation is just as uncommon for the B-Flight. Don Rice and Brad Rice take the lead going into the day, as the teams of Johnathan Rhoads and Sam Moore are joined by Shawn Bateman and Gary Newberry one shot back at a 139 mark.

In the C-Flight, Gerry Singer and Dan Neal grabbed the lead on Sunday with the flights low round of 67. Singer and Neal are leading with a score of 141, one shot ahead of Steve Tyler and David Sanchez. Jack Hinkel and Billy Rowe are in third with a 144 after the first two rounds.

The D-Flight is being controlled by Chris Graham and Jody Atchley after Sunday’s play. While Chris Harris and Bill Hildebrandt fired a D-Flight low 70 on Sunday, Graham and Atchley maintain a five shot lead over the next set of competitors. Steve Zamarrippa and Terry Aycox are in second with a 149, while Harris and Hildebrandt are in third with a 151.

In the closest to the pin competition, Mike Melton took the honors on hole No. 4 with a shot which landed 2’6” from the cup. Ryan White mastered No. 8 landing his ball 5’4”, while Marty Askins was closest on No. 10. His shot landed 8’1”.

Chris Harris won the long-drive on No. 7, while Gerry Singer took the title on No. 17.
