The Duncan Demons expectations are what they’ve been for the past two seasons — win their tennis regional.

Duncan’s boys have yet to lose to another Class 4A team at any tournament, and have been the top ranked team in Class 4A.

The Demons will play host to the regional today that will include Altus, Ardmore, Lawton MacArthur, Ardmore, Chickasha, El Reno and Western Heights at the high school courts, and DHS head coach Phil Barnes said that he expects to his team to cruise into the state tournament.

“We just don’t want any slip-ups that will affect our seeding,” Barnes said. “No. 1 doubles will have a tough bracket. Altus will probably be the top seed, and Ardmore will be a four or five seed at the state tournament. We’ve won the last two, and these seniors kind of expect to do well at regionals.”

The No. 1 doubles team of Jesse Bailey and Jeffrey Hemphill is capable of winning the regional, Barnes said.

“We played Ardmore to two tiebreakers earlier this year. They beat us 7-6, 7-6, so if we go play, we can beat them,” he said.

Barnes said that a few of the teams that are normally tough opponents are in the midst of a down season.

“Ardmore and Altus are usually pretty good,” Barnes said. “They are a little bit down this year. We really just don’t want to make any mistakes.”

Barring any unforeseen happenings, the Demons should have an easy time of making it to state.

“I think we should win No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles,” Barnes said. “And No. 1 doubles can win if they go play. I don’t want to sound overconfident, but I really feel like we are better than everyone else at the other events.”

Bailey and Hemphill will join Sean Cobble (No. 1 singles) and Aaron Buchanan (No. 2 singles) as seniors making their last appearance on DHS’ courts, but Barnes doesn’t see that as a factor in the tourney.

“I don’t think they look at it like that,” he said. “In fact, I haven’t even thought of it that way. You play so many tournaments away from home that being at home isn’t that big of a deal.”
