Duncan High School Volleyball finished the El Reno Tournament in second place after going 3-2 to bring their 2019 season record to 4-3 on the year.

The Duncan Lady Demons Volleyball completed their big first week of the season by finishing second at the El Reno Tournament going 3-2 on Saturday.

Starting off Saturday morning against Hennessey with a 2-0 set victory, the Lady Demons went on to face Seminole winning 2-0 before facing off against Santa Fe South the first time.

In the first match against Santa Fe South, the Lady Demons dropped both sets before facing Guymon and winning 2-0 to make it to the championship match for the second year in a row.

Facing off against Santa Fe South again, the Lady Demons volleyball team lost 2-0 finishing as runner-up.

Lady Demons head coach Amanda Lard was proud of the way her team competed in the tournament and said that the matches with Santa Fe South were evenly matched through the day.

“We went in and kind of had a little bit of a slow start with it being early in the morning and the long drive, but once we got rolling we did pretty well against Hennessey and Seminole,” Lard said. “Santa Fe South, it was just back and forth the whole time. Both teams played extremely hard and neither team deserved to loose because it was just so even and both teams were making big plays. Everybody fought, both teams and both sides, it was fun to watch. We didn’t like the end of it, however, it was fun to watch.”

Playing in seven games in six days including the five on Saturday, the Lady Demons will not have another match until Friday when they travel to the Sand Springs Tournament.

Lard said there was a few missed opportunities throughout Saturday and the Lady Demons will look to work on different situations.

“We had some things that we could have exploited on the other team, we had some hits that were open and we had some things that we didn’t take advantage of,” Lard said. “We are still trying to find our consistency and we will have moments of brilliance and then we will miss a serve. Then we will have another flash of greatness but then we do something else that is stuff that is in our control, it is just mental things that we are struggling with.”

Duncan seniors Abbi Price and Emily Sutherland were named to the All-Tournament team for the El Reno Tournament and will head to Sand Springs for their next tournament.

Starting their tournament at 1 p.m. Friday against Booker T. Washington at Sand Springs High School, Lard is excited with her teams effort and knows the Lady Demons team effort is something to be proud of.

“They play so hard, their heart is there, their effort is there and they play so hard,” Lard said. “If you can get a team to play hard then they can do anything. It is just overcoming those mental hurdles that we kind of set up for ourselves. People keep telling me that your girls play so hard. They do play hard so I love that about them and we can build anything of that because their effort is there. I’m really proud of them and how they fought.”
