With the threat of rain looking to mess with the regionals schedule for the Duncan Lady Demons softball team, the quest for the Class 5A State Tournament began Tuesday in El Reno.
Trying to start off on the right foot, the Lady Demons lost 12-6 to Noble. Duncan then faced Western Heights with the Lady Demons getting the 7-6 walk-off victory over Western Heights to save their season.
Game 1- Noble 12, Duncan 6
Having to fight back early after a four-run top of the first inning, the Duncan Lady Demons were able to get one back in the bottom of the first inning.
Mackenzie Cogburn drove in KK Miller with a ground out RBI to cut the Noble lead to 4-1 before the Lady Bears got two in the top of the second to lead 6-1.
Duncan would get one run back after a one out single from Tristan Blackburn and an error from Noble brought her in to put the game at 6-2 in favor of the Lady Bears.
Allowing three runs, the Lady Demons had their best inning in the bottom of the fifth when the first three hitters reached with no outs to start off their offensive threat.
Alyssa Childers and Kira Pickerell would come in on a fielders choice error while Lexi Bingham drew a bases loaded a walk to put Noble up 9-5 after five innings of play.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Demons brought the bases loaded again when Cogburn got the bases loaded walk to bring in the run and make it 9-6 in favor of the Noble Lady Bears.
Adding three in the top of the seventh, the Lady Demons being the home team tried to fight back with Noble getting three outs to move to the winner’s bracket and sending Duncan to an elimination game.
Game 2- Duncan 7, Western Heights 6
Trying to prolong their season, the Lady Demons got the offense going early in the bottom half of the first inning after allowing the first run of the game in the top of the first inning.
With the Lady Demons up to bat in the bottom half of the first inning, Duncan got a double from Childers to tie the game up at one apiece with the next few batters reaching to load the bases and give Duncan some scoring chances.
Wild pitches came in bunches with Childers, Pickerell and Cogburn coming in to take the 4-1 lead before recording the first out in the bottom of the first inning.
Hannah Harper drove in the next run with a bases loaded walk to make it 5-1 and a dropped third strike scored another run for the Lady Demons to lead 6-1 with two outs in the inning.
The Lady Jets were able to add one run in the top of the second and two in the top of the third to cut the Lady Demons lead to 6-4 with Western Heights able to tie the ball game up at six apiece in the top of seventh.
Looking to end the game as the home team in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Demons got a ground ball which was hit hard, and Western Heights threw the ball away from the first baseman’s glove.
Harper who was running at the beginning of the play made it home to get the victory and survive with the 7-6 victory to put them three victories away from the State Tournament.
Their journey will begin at noon today against Noble who dropped the final game against El Reno on Tuesday evening.
