After a routine start of the week with the 3-0 victory against Elgin Monday evening, the Duncan Demons had a tough test Tuesday at home against Class 5A MacArthur out of Lawton in a true test of their skills.
Duncan having to fight through all of the sets ended up getting the 3-1 victory over the Lawton Lady Highlanders, but fell in the first set before taking the final three sets in the match of two Class 5A teams.
Emily Sutherland got the kill to start set 1 however, it was back and forth battle which saw MacArthur get the 25-23 victory over the Lady Demons.
Lady Demon’s biggest lead in the first set came at 13-11 when Klarissa Tate and Sutherland gave Duncan the lead however MacArthur was able to storm back and get the victory to put Duncan down 1-0 in the game.
In the second set the Lady Demons jumped out to an 8-1 lead before taking down MacArthur 25-17 to tie the game up at one apiece.
In the run that built the Lady Demons lead to 8-1, senior Auston Holz and Sutherland along with Tate made sure Duncan got the set victory despite building the lead to nine with the help of another senior Abbi Price.
The three seniors of Holz, Sutherland and Price put the set out of reach with Sutherland finishing off with the kill to put the game back in Duncan’s favor heading to the third set.
Trying to take the match lead, the Lady Demons were able to do so in the third set with several aces as Duncan got the 25-17 set three victory to put Duncan ahead 2-1 in the game.
Aces from Price and Kyndle Ledford made sure the Lady Demons only needed one more set for the match victory as Duncan got kills from Kaylee Foster and Sutherland to keep them ahead of MacArthur leading by as much as eight.
Not wanting to leave any doubts to determine the winner, the Duncan Lady Demons had a flawless fourth set winning 25-11 in the biggest victory in a set for the Lady Demons in 2019.
Starting off with a 9-0 lead before MacArthur got their first point the next run for the Lady Demons was an eight point run that gave Duncan the 17-1 lead before MacArthur scored their next point on the Lady Demons.
MacArthur got their third point after only a three point run but the Lady Demons was able to get the match point from Ledford right after the Lady Highlanders went on an eight point run to cut the fourth set lead before the Lady Demons put them away.
Now 12-7 on the season, the Duncan Lady Demons will travel to Tipton Thursday for their next match before finishing their weekend in their final regular season tournament at Noble this weekend.
Game time for the Duncan-Tipton game will be at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday at Tipton followed by the ninth grade and JV matches.
