Playing in the last game before the final rankings to decide playoffs, the Duncan Lady Demons got a statement victory over Altus winning 51-44
After losing a close one to No. 3 Ardmore a couple of days before, the Lady Demons took care of No. 18 Altus by jumping out to a big lead in the first quarter before the Lady Bulldogs came charging back.
Alexis Giles hit two first quarter buckets including a three to put Duncan up 9-5 then Katelyn Samuels hit a three of her own to put the Lady Demons up 12-5.
Abbi Price also had two points in the quarter while Kyndle Ledford hit a three with the Lady Demons holding on to a two point lead heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter for the Lady Demons was the big one for them to extend their lead even further as Samuels, Price and Ledford were the biggest parts of the offense.
After a three basket from Price and a basket from Samuels, Ledford went to the line and converted four straight free throw attempts and hit one final bucket to take a nine point lead into halftime.
In the third quarter the Lady Demons got a bucket from Sydney White to start the scoring while Price knocked down a shot and two free throws before a big three extended the lead.
Samuels hit the three to put the Lady Demons up by 14 at 35-21 before White hit two free throws putting the lead at 16 before Altus got a couple of buckets to end the third quarter.
Altus would try to make a comeback and was able to get the score within five points in the final quarter, however, Price and Ledford hit some free throws keeping the lead in their favor.
Price also hit a three point shot to put the icing on the cake and get the victory over Altus to put their record at 9-11 on the season.
Leading in the scoring for the Lady Demons was Price with 16, Ledford had 12 points and Samuels had 10 to have three players in double figures.
Altus had Lakysia Johnson hit 32 of the 44 points for the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Demons coach Mike Fitts said it was a huge victory for the team and only letting her do the damage against Duncan.
“That is the fourth ranked opponent that we have been able to beat and the girls have done well. We are starting to play well at the right time and this is the time of the year you want to play well,” Fitts said. “They are a tough squad, that girl Johnson had 32 and she is just tough. You can’t put one girl on her and she may be one of the best players in the area just for what she can do. Most people don’t know she can shoot the three a little bit but she spends most of her time driving to the basket and drawing fouls. She is just hard to guard but we just tried to do the best we could on her and tried to make sure that no else got going.”
The next game for the Lady Demons will be tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. hosting Cache and for Fitts knows the momentum from this game will help for the rest of the year.
“You just want to be playing your best basketball. I mean win or lose you want to be playing well going into that so that when you get to the playoff game that you are playing your best basketball,” Fitts said. “That is what everyone hopes for and whenever the regular season ends the new season begins and everyone is 0-0. No one has a record and no one has an advantage or disadvantage you are just going to play.”
