Despite a long road trip for their lone game of the week, the Duncan Lady Demons basketball team got the 36-23 victory over Durant this past Friday.

Defense and free throws turned out to be the biggest reasons for the victory as Abbi Price hit 3-of-4 at the charity stripe while Kaylee Foster hit 2-of-3 to have five of the nine points in the first quarter.

Alexis Giles hit two buckets from the field with the Lady Demons going to the second quarter to continue their streak at the free throw line with help from three other players in the quarter.

Madi Hallford and Sydney White both went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe while Kyndle Ledford hit a big three bucket and the Lady Demons had seven points in the second quarter.

The Lady Demons biggest quarter came right after halftime and White hit two buckets, Katelyn Samuels hit a bucket along with Abbi Price who went perfect in her free throw attempts of the quarter.

Scoring 11 points in the third quarter and having 27, the Lady Demons were led by Foster who had two buckets and one free throw, KK Miller went a perfect 2-for-2 at the charity stripe while Price had two at the free throw line.

The Lady Demons head coach Mike Fitts said that going 17-for-24 at the free throw line and causing 24 turnovers was a big key.

“Durant came out hitting pretty well but once our defense got going they locked in,” Fitts said. “We didn’t shoot as well as we had hoped to overall, but that is where defense comes in. The defense made up for it. We outscored them 10-2 in transition points. That was also big. We made a little run in the 3rd quarter to extend the lead and tried to control the ball after that.

Price had a big game for the Lady Demons leading in scoring with nine points with 13 rebounds and four steals to help lead Duncan for the victory.

Foster had eight points, White had six, Giles had four, Ledford had three points, Miller had two, Samuels had two and Hallford had two to wrap up the scoring for Duncan.

The Demons boys faced off against Durant, who is ranked No. 20 in Class 5A, in the second game and the Lions beat the Duncan boys 66-40 to drop them to their fifth straight loss.

With the split, the Lady Demons and Demons will come back home for two straight games in Duncan facing off against Ardmore this evening and then they will host Altus on Friday.

The game time for the Lady Demons is 6:30 p.m. this evening against Ardmore with the boys following at approximately 8 p.m. then Friday will be homecoming for the teams.
