Trying to avenge their first loss of the season against the same team they were facing for third place at the Stephens County Tournament, the Velma-Alma Lady Comets win third place beating Empire Lady Bulldogs 32-29 in a close low scoring game at Comanche.
Shain Ille hit two three pointers and two baskets while Kennedy McGuire and Destinee Wofford hit baskets as the Lady Comets jumped out to a 18-8 lead at the end of one quarter.
Kiersten Collins got the Lady Bulldogs into the game with a three in the first quarter and Jade Millan hit two baskets as the Lady Bulldogs went on a run in the second quarter to get back into the game.
Jasmine Millan and Jaycee Porter were big parts of the Empire Lady Bulldogs comeback as their team went on an 8-0 run to bring it within two points before Velma-Alma got their first points.
Wofford hit two free throws and a bucket to keep the lead at four points as Empire outscored Velma-Alma 10-4 in the second quarter of play.
Defensively both teams held each other in check in the third quarter as both teams were held to seven points combined with Empire cutting into the lead winning the third 4-3 in points scored.
Baskets from Jade Millan and Collins helped while Wofford got all three points for the Lady Comets as they held on to a slim 25-22 lead after three quarters of play.
Ille and Jonna Kimbrough got a basket apiece early in the fourth quarter while Jade Millan and Porter got the game within three points and a free throw from Jaycee Kimbrough helped the Lady Comets be up by four points.
Millan hit a three point bucket while Wofford and Rylee McLain were able to seal the game with their final free throws to win by three points and beat Empire for the first time this season.
Ille who was the all-tournament team selection for the Lady Comets had 13 points while Wofford had 11 points while the Empire Lady Bulldogs were led by Jade Millan who had 11 points and Jasmine Millan who had eight points in the game.
Lady Comets will host Alex Lady Longhorns starting at 6:30 p.m. this evening while Empire will travel to face Walters starting at 6:30 p.m. this evening.
