Destinee Wofford

Destinee Wofford battles against a Lady Longhorns defender in the Lady Comets victory this past Tuesday against Ringling. 

Despite falling down early in the first quarter, the Velma-Alma Lady Comets were able to get past the Ringling Lady Blue Devils winning 42-35 in a close game throughout all four quarters.

Ringling started off the game with five straight points when the Lady Comets got on the board with a three point shot from Shain Ille.

Destinee Wofford tied the game up on a fast break turnover basket and Ille grabbed the first lead of the game with a basket of her own to lead 7-5.

Wofford hit a three of her own and Ringling answered back with a three of their own to end the first quarter with the Lady Comets leading 10-8.

The Lady Blue Devils took the early second quarter lead with a three point shot and they started a string of extending their lead to six points before the Lady Comets got their first basket of the quarter.

Wofford hit her second three point shot of the night after pass from Rylee McLain that found the hands of Wofford who put the shot up to have Ringling lead 16-13.

Samie Enloe hit two straight buckets to give the Lady Comets a 17-16 lead with both teams defense trying to get the edge in the quarter.

A foul was called on Ringling late in the second quarter which sent Jaycee Kimbrough to the line and she hit both free throws to lead 19-16 before Ringling tied the game with a three point basket.

Ille came up on the scoreboard again hitting a three point shot to give the Lady Comets the halftime lead of 22-19.

The third quarter ended up being the Lady Comets best of the game as they were able to build the lead up despite Ringling getting the first bucket of the quarter.

Kennedy McGuire got the lead back up to three points and Ringling answered to put Velma-Alma up by one point when the Lady Comets got another bucket from Enloe, her third of the game.

Free throws put Ringling back within reach with the Lady Comets leading 26-25. It would be the last points for the Lady Blue Devils as Velma-Alma started a run to end the quarter.

Ille, Wofford, McGuire and McLain got the 9-0 run to end the third quarter with the Lady Comets leading by 10 at 35-25 heading into the fourth and final quarter of play.

The Lady Comets would extend their lead to 12 with a shot form Ille going in and Ringling tried to make a comeback by scoring the next several points to cut it to a seven point lead for Velma-Alma.

Wofford and McKenna Rubrecht got the lead back up to 10 points and Ringling hit another three bucket to cut the lead to seven points with Wofford getting it back up to nine with two straight free throws.

Ringling got the final points of the quarter with two free throws but couldn’t make a complete comeback and the Lady Comets held on for their 19th victory of the season.

The Lady Comets were led in scoring by Wofford who had 16, Ille had 11 and Enloe had six points while the rest of the points were spread out between four different players.

Now 19-2 on the season, the Lady Comets have two regular season games left on the year as they have their last road game this evening and their last regular season home game this coming Monday.

The Lady Comets will face Wilson starting at 6:30 p.m. this evening with the last regular season home game starting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 10 against Walters High School.
