It’s getting down to crunch time for the area softball teams and one of them in particular is the Central High Lady Bronchos. CHHS has been on a mission all season to reach the state tournament after falling just short last season. Tuesday afternoon brought the challenge of Minco as the Lady Bronchos looked to continue their impressive play.
Thanks to another solid pitching performance from junior Christa Sparks and a solid hitting performance from senior Austyn Taylor, the Lady Bronchos claimed another victory 9-5 on the road.
After the game head coach Chad Weldon said he was pleased with the victory but thought certain things could have been better.
“We played well overall as a team in this game,” he said. “But our hitting could have been better. Our defense played great and that’s what’s important.”
Senior Austyn Taylor led the offense for the Lady Bronchos going 2-for-4 on the day with junior Lacie Phillips going 2-for-3 on the day as well. Freshman Sara Hawkey, Junior Lora-Lynn Loomis and junior Aleia Daniels all collected one hit during the game.
Coach Weldon said he wasn’t surprised with the way his team played after going 2-2 this past weekend at the Southwest Shootout in Sterling.
“This is a tough team and they know how to come back from tough losses,” he said. “I’m not surprised with the way we came back and played today.”
Central High will be back in action Thursday morning at the Comanche Tournament which will take place at the Comanche softball complex. CHHS will play Fox at 12:30 Thursday before taking on Empire at 3:30. Weldon said that he’s hoping his team plays well and gets themselves ready for the district tournament.
“The goal for this weekend is to go play some good games and get ourselves ready for district,” Weldon said. “Hopefully we come away with some good wins as well.”
Sparks went the distance on the mound striking out four batters while allowing 11 hits on the night.
