Kirkland with teammates

Joined by her teammates and fellow Oklahoma City University signee, Erin Kirkland will now attend the University after signing her letter of intent earlier this month at Duncan High School.

Despite wearing red for her high school career, Erin Kirkland will put on blue for college as she is ready to cheer for the Oklahoma City University Stars spirit squad.

One of the three senior captains for Duncan High School, Kirkland will join teammate Karamya Whitten, who also signed a couple of tables down to Oklahoma City University as well.

The process started when OCU’s coach reached out to Kirkland with a tour cementing the deal the decision to go to college at OCU.

“The coach reached out to me and I had committed to another school and I went to a cheer clinic and I really liked it,” Kirkland said. “Then I toured the school and then I just fell in love and now I’m super excited to go there.”

Her high school coach for the last two years has been Brooke Kephart and she loves that two of her cheerleaders are heading to the same school and is excited to see what the future holds for them.

“I am so excited for Erin and Karamya to continue their cheer career,” Kephart said. “They are both amazing and talented cheerleaders with very bright futures.”

Serving as the captain this year was one of the highlights of her time at Duncan and for Kirkland, she hopes to enjoy her time at Oklahoma City University.

“I love Duncan and wouldn’t have chosen to be anywhere else,” Kirkland said. “I love that I got to be a cheer captain for this year. Right now my plan is to go and get a degree for exercise science, but it is probably going to change, but I know I want to be involved in a lot of clubs and activities at OCU.”

With her just finishing at Duncan High School and getting to sign in front of family and friends, Kirkland said without her friends’ and family’s support, none of this would be possible.

“I couldn’t have done it without my friends or family,” Kirkland said. “They do a lot for me and I’m really grateful for them and I love them.”
