COMANCHE — Highlighted by a special presentation of a state championship trophy, Comanche High wrapped up its 2010-11 athletic year with its all sports banquet on Monday at Comanche Middle School.
All of the Indians’ coaches were on hand for the event and spoke highly of their student athletes, praising their efforts throughout the season.
Sean Hushbeck was the first coach to speak and opened by introducing and honoring the girls basketball team, which struggled with injuries for most of the season. Hushbeck then introduced the girls golf team, which captured the Class 3A state title on Thursday.
The team joined him in front of the crowd and presented athletic director Aaron Weast with the trophy.
“Basketball has always been my favorite sport, but golf is now one of the most special,” Hushbeck said during the presentation.
Head football and track and field coach Steve Justus also made a special point to recognize Comanche’s athletes who qualified for last week’s state track meet. Qualifiers included junior Ashley Spann, senior Kale Clinkenbeard and freshman Payge Graham.
Following brief speeches by the rest of the coaches, seniors Staci Townsend and Seth Johnson were honored as the Indians’ 2010-11 senior athletes of the year.
Weast wrapped up the ceremony with a presentation of plaques to each of Comanche’s senior athletes and praised all of the school’s coaches for their efforts and willingness to work with the kids every season.
“I didn’t have anyone come into my office this year and complain about our coaches, so that means they’re taking care of the kids like they’re supposed to,” Weast said.
