Duncan Demon Lucas Gillette was named to the Oklahoma All-State soccer team and will be a member of the Class 5A west team.
“It feels really good to be selected to the All-State team,” Gillette said. “It was one of my goals this year to do, my other one was to reach the playoffs, so this is kind of a good feeling.”
The Demons finished with a 6-8 record, and while the season didn’t go quite as well as they would have liked, Gillette said it was still a good season.
“The season was the best one that we’ve ever played,” he said. “There were a few games that we could have won and maybe should have won, but over all it was a good season.”
One of the turning points that really stuck out for Gillette during the season was the Demon’s 1-0 overtime win over Class 5A rival Chickasha at Halliburton Stadium.
During that game I felt like we were finally one unified team and not just a bunch of soccer players,” Gillette said. “We played together and no one tried to do it all on their own.”
Duncan coach Marcus Williams said he was proud of Gillette for all of his accomplishments during the season.
“He is literally the heart and soul of our team,” Williams said. “He totally deserved to be on the All-State team and I’m really proud of him for that.”
Before the season began, Williams named Gillette one of the captains of the Demon squad and Williams said he took that role and ran with it.
“He really took on the role of captain and took it to the fullest,” he said. “He really wanted to lead this team and really take it to places they hadn’t been.”
Williams added one of the things he has admired the most of Gillette is his character.
“He really is a great player to coach,” he said. “He has that never die attitude and will definatley do anything we ask him to do and anything to get the job done.”
