The Duncan Demons soccer team is just one game into the season, but it can already say it’s faced one of the year’s biggest tests.
Matched against 2012 Class 6A state qualifier U.S Grant in its regular season opener, the Demons rose to the challenge, but fell victim to an agressive Generals offense in a 3-1 loss.
“We battled the whole time,” Williams said. “Even though we gave up three goals, we still didn’t stop fighting. That’s a positive.”
The Generals wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on a goal from Conrado Carpio.
After applying more pressure on the Duncan defense, U.S. Grant built its lead to 2-0 when Carpio created some separation between the defense and blasted a shot into the top left corner in the 49th minute.
“Last year around this time, they beat us 10-0 so tonight we wanted to go defensive and try to grind it out,” Williams said. “We have to do a little more on finishing. We’ve done great moving the ball around but we’re not getting enough shots off.”
Duncan earned some momentum at the start of the second half when Justin McCall took the Demons’ first possesion down the field and was fouled inside the penalty box in the half’s opening minute. Josh Adamson made the Generals pay for the foul, placing the penalty kick into the top right corner to cut the lead in half.
Just four minutes later, the Generals reclaimed their two goal lead when Martin Mata took a pass from Carpio and squeezed in the team’s third score into the bottom left corner.
“I thought we were going to come back and fight and then that last goal they scored kinda set us right where we were to start the second half,” Williams said.
The second half was not without opportunities for Duncan, with Markwae Sanders and McCall putting the team in position to score more than once. Despite multiple breakaway chances, offsides fouls and missed shots prevented the team from notching its second goal.
The Demons will try to bounce back Tuesday when it faces Lawton on the road with kickoff set for 8 p.m. from Cameron Stadium.
