Editor’s Note: This is part three in a series about the 2019-2020 Duncan High School Athletics school year and will show how the Duncan Demons performed during the school year.
The Lady Demons volleyball team had seniors hoping for a State Tournament trip and the Duncan High School cross country teams were looking to get back to State.
Duncan Volleyball had three seniors in the starting lineup to begin 2019 and got around the .500 mark after two tournaments including facing off against a team they would see later at Regionals.
In late August and early September, the Lady Demons were able to get back on a winning streak that saw them break into the Class 5A Rankings and head into the final part of the season.
They were able to get two victories against ranked Noble and MacArthur to end the season and the Lady Demons volleyball team got the number two seed in the Claremore regional to face off against Will Rogers in the first round match.
Beating them 2-0 in the Sandite Invitational, the Lady Demons got the 3-0 sweep to face off against Claremore for the right to head to the State Championship Tournament.
The Lady Demons lost 3-0 in the Regional Championship to Claremore and coach Amanda Lard, who just finished her fifth season, said the six seniors left their mark and was proud of the way they performed.
“Once I was able to talk, it took me a while because this group is so special to me. For four years I have watched them grow and I have watched them become the awesome people and players they are,” Lard said. “It was tough for a minute. I told them that it didn’t end the way we wanted it to but I wouldn’t trade any of our experiences for anything in the world. I wouldn’t go back and change it if meant we got to go to state but if I had to let go some of those things I wouldn’t do it. That is how special a group they are and I told them I was proud of them.”
Duncan Volleyball will have a lot of contributing members returning for 2020 and Lard is hopping to make it back to regionals and get to the State Tournament.
For Cross Country, the Demons had one state qualifier, Blake Meadows, a junior who made his second straight State Cross Country meet by qualifying individually placing 12th overall at regionals.
Meadows ran a time of 18 minutes flat and placed in the top 50 at state improving his time by 16 seconds as he ran a 17:44.45 at the State meet being Duncan’s only representative.
