Playing in their first games since the Stephens County Tournament, the Empire Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs basketball teams split their first game of the week against Walters on the road.
The Lady Bulldogs got the 42-35 victory while the Bulldogs dropped a close matchup with the Blue Devils 53-43 as both teams looked to gain ground before the playoffs.
The Lady Bulldogs started off with their best quarter of the game scoring 18 points with three players hitting multiple baskets to start the game.
Jade Millan hit three buckets with one from beyond the arc and Jasmine Millan and Jaycee Porter both hit two buckets apiece with one long range bucket coming from Kiersten Collins in the quarter.
Porter started the second quarter off big hitting two three point shots while going a perfect 2-for-2 at the charity stripe.
The other offensive help for the Lady Bulldogs was Jade Millan and she got the other seven points with two buckets and one long range bucket to have 33 points at halftime against Walters.
In the third quarter, the Lady Bulldogs only scored six points, Jade Millan had four of them while Porter had two, and Empire had a small lead going into the fourth quarter.
Porter and the Lady Bulldogs offense was held in check in the fourth quarter as she hit the only bucket while Jasmine Millan hit one of two free throws to have three team points but the still got the victory.
Leading in scoring was Jade Millan who had 18, Porter had 16, Jasmine Millan had five and Collins had three points in their 13th victory of the season.
The Bulldogs were up next and they jumped out to a small lead using the power of McRay Weber and Brayden Miller who had multiple baskets.
Weber had six points while Miller had four and they also had a contribution from Daniel Alvarez who hit a bucket and the Bulldogs led 11-10 at the end of one quarter of play.
The Walters defense only held Empire to six free throws in the second quarter while they had four buckets to take the 18-17 halftime lead and started their offense in the third quarter.
Connor Francis went a perfect 2-for-2 at the charity stripe, Weber went 2-for-3 at the line, Jackson Smith went 1-for-2 and Alvarez also went 1-for-2 at the charity stripe.
Alvarez in the third quarter started to heat up as he had seven of the 16 points for the Bulldogs with him connecting on three baskets in the quarter.
Noel Sarimento helped by getting his only four points in the third quarter making two shots while Francis hit a three and Weber went a perfect 2-for-2 at the charity stripe.
Still behind 39-33 at the end of three quarters, the Bulldogs tried to make a comeback with Francis getting a three point shot to fall and baskets from Alvarez and Smith.
Weber and Alvarez were able to hit three free throws but the Blue Devils were able to outscore them 14-10 to win by 10 points in a game that saw two Empire players in double figures.
Alvarez led the way with 13 points while Weber had 11 and Francis had eight for the Bulldogs as they dropped to 7-10 on the season and both teams will be home for their next game.
The Lady Bulldogs will host Chattanooga starting at 6:30 p.m. this evening followed by the boys game which will begin at 8 p.m. this evening at Empire High School.
