Jaycee Santos

Jaycee Santos, a senior for the Lady Demons’ swim team, swims in a meet earlier this season. Santos was part of the relay team that took home first place in this last Tuesday’s meet.

Hoping to replace a meet that canceled, the Duncan swim teams finished in the top spots this past Tuesday at a home meet with the Demons taking first and the Lady Demons finishing second.

The meet started off with a big relay win for the Lady Demons as the team of Hope Swor, Stephanie Elser, Gaby Glover and Rylee Branch beat Deer Creek by less than a second to bring home first.

The Lady Demons took the top two finishes in the 200-meter individual medley race with Elser winning and Catherine Hunter finishing second.

The boys’ first victory of the meet came in the next event.

Demons’ senior Mayson Thiebaud took the victory in the 200-meter individual medley race and the next victory for Duncan came in the 400-meter freestyle during which Duncan took the top four spots.

Lucas Cantero won the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 5:50.81 and the rest of the finishers were Duncan swimmers as well with Asa Pollock finishing second, Caleb Ramsey finishing third and Cody Ramsey finishing fourth.

Thiebaud earned his second win of the event and the third for the boys’ team as he won the 100-meter breaststroke race with a time of 1:13.09. The boys finished with 416 points and beat Deer Creek by 172 points.

Demons’ head swim coach Andrew Bowers said he was proud of the way his teams placed and how they competed in new events and continue to build depth.

“This was a great meet for our team to gain some more confidence. We moved a lot of swimmers around to new events, this meet was able to give us a look at where we can put swimmers in order to build our depth,” Bowers said. “That made a huge difference as we were able to do very well on the boys’ side despite only winning three events. The depth on the girls’ side showed up also. We swam against Deer Creek earlier this year and they beat us by over 100 points, they only got us by 10 this time. There is no doubt that we are getting better and gaining confidence.”

Duncan will have their regular season finale late Friday evening as they host Mid-Del Public Schools, Lawton Schools and Marlow starting at 5 p.m. Jan. 15 at The Simmons Center.

Results from the final regular season meet will publish in the Tuesday edition of The Duncan Banner.
