Hope Swor

Senior Hope Swor competes for a state title on day two of the Class 5A State Tournament. The Lady Demons swim team took home the Class 5A State Academic Championship trophy.

Usually the Duncan Swim team has one All-State selection each year but in 2020-2021 they made history as two of their swimmers were named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State team.

Mayson Thiebaud and Hope Swor, who were two of the top placers for the Duncan Swim teams at the Class 5A State Swim meet in February, will represent their team one final time this summer.

Thiebaud, now the record holder for the 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle race, will appear as one of the representatives while Swor, who placed in the 100 free and 100 backstroke, will join the ranks of Duncan All-Staters in swim.

Duncan Swim Coach Andrew Bowers said he was proud of those two and the season they had and feels like they are a good representation for the program.

“Hope and Mayson both had phenomenal seasons. Coming into the season, Mayson was dealing with some injuries and even had to miss a couple of meets with those nagging him, but we knew if he was healthy that he would be chasing school records and knew he had a good chance of breaking them,” Bowers said. “Hope was kind of on the periphery of being a great swimmer her junior year, but she came in this year and was a consistent force. She worked extremely hard everyday in practice and reaped the benefits at the state meet, medaling in both the 100 free and 100 backstroke.”

Duncan has had an All-State selection the last five out of six years and Bowers said he was very thankful for these two swimmers and believes the team should be recognized for their help in these two awards.

“I really believe that our entire team should be recognized. When you have multiple All-Staters, it speaks very highly of the entire program,” Bowers said. “Our whole team this year came together and was extremely supportive of one another. They helped encourage and push each other to be the best they can be. Without the great culture that we have, these individual accomplishments would be difficult to achieve.”

With the two All-State selections, Thiebaud and Swor will now get a chance to compete at the All-State meet hosted this summer at the Oklahoma Coaches Association week.

Time, date and location has not been selected as of this time and once those details come in, The Banner will publish full details.
