After traveling to the El Reno Tournament and hosting Eisenhower Monday evening, the Duncan Lady Demons softball team dropped a district game at home against El Reno 6-1 Tuesday evening.
Both teams traded a 1-2-3 inning to start off the game, then El Reno got off to a fast start in the top of the second to put them in the lead.
It was a two out single that put the Lady Indians up 1-0 before a walk and strikeout from KK Miller ended the threat to head to the bottom half of the second with Duncan batting.
The first base hit for the Lady Demons came from Mackenzie Cogburn who hit a ground ball single to center field but was erased on a double play and a ground out to keep El Reno ahead 1-0.
In the circle in the top half of the third Miller kept El Reno off the scoreboard by having two strikeouts and only one walk to head to the bottom half of the third inning.
El Reno got a 1-2-3 bottom half of the third when the Lady Indians loaded the bases on a single and two walks with no outs in the top of the fourth.
Trying to limit the damage, Miller was able to strikeout the next hitter she faced before walking in a run to give El Reno the 2-0 lead with one out and the bases loaded.
Facing a 1-1 count, Miller got a line drive right back at her for the first out and doubled up the runner who was off on the pitch at first to end the inning with a line out double play to keep it 2-0 in favor of El Reno.
Kira Pickerell led off the bottom half of the fourth inning with a walk. Trying to advance Pickerell on a bunt after she stole second, Alyssa Childers singled on that bunt to put Pickerell at third and Childers at first with no outs.
Helping her own cause, Miller hit a deep fly to right field to score Pickerell cutting the Lady Indians lead to 2-1 while Childers, who stole second earlier in the bat, advanced to third on the sacrifice fly.
El Reno needed only two pitches to get the final two outs of the bottom of the fourth inning where one runner was left stranded and the Lady Indians clinging to a 2-1 lead.
After loading the bases and two outs in the top half of the fifth, the Lady Demons committed their first error of the game on a line drive to the shortstop which scored a run.
Leading 3-1, Miller was able to strikeout the final batter to leave it at a two run lead for the Lady Indians heading to another chance on offense for Duncan.
Emily Mefford singled on a ground ball up the middle to start off the bottom of the fifth inning, however, a ground ball double play from the El Reno pitcher to short stop back to the first baseman erased the threat in the inning.
A double in the top of the sixth added two more runs, one was earned and one was unearned, with El Reno leading 5-1. The Lady Demons got the needed two outs afterwards to stop more runs coming in.
Leading off the bottom of the sixth with a walk of Pickerell, Childers grounded out with the force out being applied at second and Childers making it to first then a hit from Miller put runners on first and second.
The next two Lady Demon batters had a pop out in foul territory and line out to the second baseman to put it into the final inning of play for both teams.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, a single to center field scored the final run of the game with Duncan having one more shot in the bottom half of the seventh to try and come back for the victory.
El Reno was able to end the game with two strikeouts and a ground out to send the Lady Demons to a 4-6 record overall on the season and district record of 2-3 in 2019.
Next game for the Lady Demons will be this evening at 4 p.m. when Duncan travels to Altus before heading to the Southmoore Festival on Saturday.
