KK Miller

KK Miller looks at a pitch and hits a home run against Altus this past Thursday. The Lady Demons dropped a close 3-2 district game against the Lady Bulldogs.

The Duncan Lady Demons softball team looked for a season sweep of the Altus Lady Bulldogs but ultimately fell 3-2 in the seventh inning of action.

Altus scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth on unearned runs because of four errors in the field by the Lady Demons.

The Lady Demons made those runs back in the top of the fifth inning as Lexi Bingham hit a double and later scored to cut the lead to 2-1 in favor of the Altus Lady Bulldogs.

Helping her own cause in the circle, KK Miller hit a solo home run to tie the ball game up at two apiece heading to the seventh inning with Altus up to bat.

Altus had a runner at second with two outs about to get out of the inning to force extra innings, but an errant throw brought the final run of the game to drop the Lady Demons to 8-8 on the season.

Miller pitched all seven innings and had 11 strikeouts in the game while Alyssa Childers led the hitting for the Lady Demons with two hits.

The Lady Demons had seven total hits, according to Coach Robert Cowan while Altus had five in the game. He said of the eight losses, they have had five games tied in the seventh or extra innings.

“We are so much better than what we were and the worst we have been beat this year was 5-1 and we are in every game,” Cowan said. “I’m not disappointed in the way we are playing, I am just disappointed we are not winning more games than we are.”

With only nine scheduled games left in the regular season, the Lady Demons have five of nine of those games against district foes. They currently rank fourth in the district with a 5-4 record.

The next game for the Lady Demons will take place at home starting at 5 p.m. Sept. 8 against Carl Albert, to whom the Lady Demons lost earlier in the year 2-0 on the road.

After that, the Lady Demons will travel to El Reno with the first pitch taking place at 5 p.m. Sept. 10. Cowan said he knows it will be a tough week but hopes to come out with a win.

“We have a tough week playing Carl Albert at home on Tuesday and then at El Reno on Thursday,” Cowan said. “We lost 2-0 to Carl Albert the first time and 5-1 to El Reno so they will both be good games.”
