After honoring the Duncan Demon seniors, Duncan’s football team took to the field looking to keep the non-district streak alive, but the Wolverines took the 39-12 victory over Duncan.
The first quarter and the first few drives were defensive stands until the special teams for the Wolverines pulled off a safety to score, first blocking the punt out of the back of the endzone.
Getting the ball back, the Wolverines got a passing touchdown from Donovan Dorsey to Esariuan Gilmore-Kelly for 57 yards, putting them up 9-0 after one quarter of play.
The Demons got the ball back early in the second quarter and had a senior connection working throughout the drive as Tate Wilkins, Desmond Pettit and Tyson Walker all found yards.
With nine minutes left in the second quarter, Wilkins and Walker connected on a 13-yard touchdown reception to make it 9-6 after the field goal attempt was blocked.
Running the clock down, the Wolverines took six minutes on their next drive and scored on a two-yard run from Christian Houston to take the 16-6 lead over Duncan.
As time was winding down in the half, Houston made his second touchdown of the game, again two yards, as the Wolverines went up 24-6 at halftime.
With 6:59 left in the third quarter, the Demons got a second touchdown pass from Wilkins to Walker, which was also from 13 yards. That cut the lead in half, putting the Wolverines up 24-12.
The Demons let up one more score in the third quarter. Devin Simpson got a passing touchdown to Jerrion Bradford to put the Wolverines up 32-12 with only one score coming late in the fourth quarter.
Duncan had one big defensive play in the fourth quarter as an interception happened from Dreydon Wiggins, however Lawton scored a big rushing touchdown to ice the game.
Houston got his third rushing touchdown of the game, this time from 61 yards out.
The Demons drop to 0-1 on the season and Lawton goes to 1-0 on the 2020 season.
Duncan will have two road games in a row with the next game for the Demons coming at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at Guthrie High School.
After the week two matchup, the Demons will return home for the district opener against MacArthur with start time set for 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at Halliburton Stadium.
