Not getting a track and field season, area cross country teams will get their start at Duncan on Saturday, Aug. 29 as the Demons and Lady Demons cross country teams begin 2020.
This is the annual start of the season for Duncan High School at New Hope Baptist Church West and coaches Todd Ledford and Tim Buben feel they are ready for cross country season to start.
Ledford said the season feels a little strange because they didn’t have track to kick them off.
“It is kind of strange because we didn’t have a track season, we had one meet in and a lot of these kids haven’t got to compete since last March,” Ledford said. “I think they are really excited and I think most of them are ready to get started and get to compete again and I think they are getting tired of practicing with no competition. I think they are ready to get going and working really hard and I think it will be a pretty exciting season for them.”
Buben agreed as a coach it was hard for him and the kids to not get a track season and he believes the Lady Demons are ready to start.
“No track season — that was disappointing a lot for the kids but it was really disappointing for the coaches because we were looking forward to so many good things happening and it kind of just went away,” Buben said. “It really didn’t hit me until the day regionals were going to happen. As far as the girls, they have had a few months off but they kind of came back ready to go in June and we got started with them and have certain restrictions we have to follow each year practicing with the kids.”
Ledford said he has a few seniors returning in Blake Meadows, Nathan Hudson and Nathan Robbins while also having two other seniors who will try to get better in Adam Clifton and Dalton Afhereny.
Joining the fold for the boys team will be Drew Talifaero, Kaceon Lolar and Caleb MacFatridge and for Ledford, he believes they will have a great season.
“These guys have put in the time in the summer and got some miles in and really have worked hard to have some success this year,” Ledford said. “It will be exciting to see and the first meet see how it goes and we will see where we need to do and where we need to go from there. Come regionals time, I really expect some cool things form these guys.”
The Lady Demons have one senior in Ariana Ewing and also have Jordan Patterson returning. They will also have other runners like Audrey Barron looking to have a great season.
The meet will start with Duncan girls at 8:15 a.m. while the varsity boys begin around 9:10 a.m. Aug. 29 at New Hope Baptist West.
