In what many people were calling the biggest game of the week, the Velma-Alma Comets used defense and power to take the 30-14 victory and the district lead over No 5 Alex.
The week before, the Comets had their best performance in school history with 82 points. The teams had a bit of a battle to get on the scoreboard first with a defensive play helping the home team out.
Comets head coach Randy Norton said this was his biggest victory to date as coach and going into the game, they thought it was going to be a more offensive battle.
“It is not at all they way we thought the game would go last night and we have scored a lot of points most games and they have scored a lot of points in most games,” Norton said. “We knew we would have our hands full with them and we held them to nothing in the first half.”
Gage Swisher got a big interception to start the game off for the Comets which put the intensity level and the speed up while holding them to around 70 yards of total offense.
Tristan Wainscott got the first score of the game when he found Lane Jones in the end zone and used the passing game to get the touchdown from 40 yards out.
The second half saw the Comets turn it on at the end of the third quarter and most of the fourth quarter. Norton said this game was big for district standings, however they need to still focus on the final three games.
“It is the biggest win I have had as a head coach and we had some really good wins last year and they just keep coming in big games and it definitely has set us up,” Norton said. “We felt like whoever won this game had a really good shot at winning district. Now with that being said, we got to go play Caddo this week and they are a really good team and they are 6-1 and they have only lost one game and it was by two points against Southwest Covenant.”
Norton said he went to go see Southwest Covenant on Thursday evening. He said the district lines up to be really tough and the win is great but the district is not decided. He wants the team to play the next three weeks.
Jones had some big runs with Wainscott also getting a big run to set up the touchdown that put them up by two touchdowns.
The next game for the Comets will take place against a Caddo team who is currently second in the district with the game taking place at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at Velma-Alma High School.
