Editor's Note: Due to an error by OSSAA. We reported a wrong golfer in the Velma-Alma story. Garrett Gilby was the one who finished third for the Comets instead of Cameron Wiggins. The Banner apologizes for the error and is happy to set the record straight.
In one of their first appearances in the State Tournament in a few years, the Velma-Alma Comets had a good showing in the 2A State Golf Tournament and placed 10th as a team.
The Velma-Alma boys team played the 2A State Tournament at the Buffalo Rock Golf Course in Cushing on May 9-10 and was subsequently named Xpress Wellness Team of the Week.
On the first day of the tournament, the Comets shot a 373 in the first round and 380 in round two. They came back for day two and shot a team best 371 to finish with a team score of 1,124.
Two of Velma-Alma’s golfers finished in the top 30 — Crue Garrett had the best finish at 12th overall and Langsten Walker came in at 27th overall.
Garrett led the team with the low scores on all three rounds. He shot 81 in round one and then 82 in round two to finish day one.
Coming back on the second day, Garrett shot his lowest of the three rounds — a 76 — to finish the 2A State Tournament with a score of 239.
Walker had his lowest round in round two of the three rounds. He began the tournament with an 88 in the first round and then shot 83 in round two for his best at Cushing.
In the third round, he came back and shot 90 to finish with a score of 261 for the tournament.
The other three golfers finished within seven spots of each other.
Garret Gilby, the third top finisher for the Comets, shot 101 in the first round and 111 for the second round.
Gilby rebounded on day two and shot 102 to finish the three rounds with a score of 314 and placed 64th in the tournament.
Caedon Lowry finished 68th with a first round score of 103, but finished with a 107 to complete day one. He then came back for day two to shoot 110 for a score of 320.
Jake Sullivan wasn’t too far behind him as he improved all three rounds. He shot 111 in the first round and then finished the first day with a score of 108.
Sullivan then came back and shot 103 in the final round to have a score of 322, good for 71st in the tournament.
All five Velma-Alma golfers will return to the team next season and will look to improve on their top 10 finish as a team.
