With one team getting to the Class 3A State Tournament and another getting close to the Class A State Tournament, Comanche and Velma-Alma took top honors in The Duncan Banner’s All-Area Fast Pitch team.
After finishing with a record of 25-12 and punching their first ticket to the 3A Fast Pitch Softball State Tournament, the Comanche Lady Indians received the Coach of the Year and Pitcher of the Year awards.
Coach Aaron Minor, who completed his seventh season with Comanche, got them to their first State Tournament appearance since 1989 and was voted by the area coaches as Coach of the Year.
Minor led a team with only two seniors to the appearance after winning a district title and a regional title at their home field this past season.
The season ended in the State Quarterfinals against Class 3A State Champions Washington who ended up shutting out all three opponents on the way to the title.
One of the reasons for the season success was Comanche pitcher Kamrey Rendon, who won the Pitcher of the Year award for the All-Area team helping Comanche throughout the 2021 campaign.
Rendon’s record was 17-9 overall with a 2.70 ERA and 80 strikeouts with her last win of the campaign in the Regional Championship game where she went all seven innings and struck out three batters.
Velma-Alma had the other two award winners as Katie Barton took home the Player of the Year and Kassidee Thompson was named Newcomer of the Year.
Barton was this year’s only All-State selection in the area as she was lights out for the Lady Comets all year long and helped them to a winning record.
Hitting .421 on the season with two home runs and 25 RBIs on the year, Barton only had one strikeout at the plate and stole 32 bases on the year.
She was selected on the Small West All-State team as a utility player and had less than 10 strikeouts throughout her four year career at Velma-Alma.
The Lady Comets also got the Newcomer of the Year award as Thompson had a batting average of .302 on her first year on the varsity team for Velma-Alma.
Thompson had 26 RBIs on the year with an on base percentage of .368. She scored 29 runs while having a fielding average of .992 for the Lady Comets.
Comanche had the most representation on the All-Area teams with eight members selected followed by Velma-Alma who had seven members on the teams.
Nominations came from all seven area coaches in Stephens County with the final selections chosen by The Duncan Banner Sports Staff.
