Barton and Hunt

Coach Stefan Hunt high fives Katie Barton. The two were part of the individual award winners for the 2020 Fast Pitch All-Area softball list.

Velma-Alma softball, in the fourth year under Coach Stefan Hunt, had a big year that saw them the closest to the State Tournament in several years. The team also took home a few of the top individual awards for The Duncan Banner All-Area Fast Pitch list.
All seven Stephens County coaches submitted nominations. Sports staff at The Banner selected the list based on stats submitted by the coaches.
This year, the Lady Comets went 24-8 and ranked in the top of Class A for most of the 2020 season. For that, the Coach of the Year award went to Coach Hunt of the Lady Comets.
His team got to the final day of the Class A Regionals before Caddo ended the 2020 campaign.
Hunt’s team also took the Player of the Year Award and the Pitcher of the Year award.
Junior Katie Barton took home the Player of the Year award after hitting a lot of home runs and registering a hit almost half the time she appeared at the plate.
Barton led the area in home runs with 14 round trippers. She had one of the bigger batting averages in the area with a .444 batting average.
Her teammate, Shain Ille, was named Co-Pitcher of the Year with Comanche’s Kinley Rendon as both pitchers had almost near identical stats for each of their teams.
Both pitchers won 15-plus games for their teams as their teams went deep into the playoffs with both teams making it to their respective regional tournaments.
The final individual award was Newcomer of The Year and that went to Marlow freshman Alisha Lemons who was a force in the outfield for the Lady Outlaws.
Lemons was one of the run producers for the Lady Outlaws as she was the lead off hitter and had several chances to drive in runs for Marlow during a season that saw them get to the final day of regionals.
On the first team, Velma-Alma had four selections and Comanche had three while Duncan had two players and Marlow and Central High had one selection each.
Both of Stephens County’s All-State selections were on the First Team as Velma-Alma’s Jaycee Kimbrough and Central High’s Leigha Harris will represent Stephens County as All-State selections.
Kimbrough and Harris will both play in the All-State game next summer with time and date to be determined.
