Gardeners define groundcover as any material covering the ground surface so the ground can’t be seen from above and keeps the rain from striking directly upon it. In general, groundcovers can be grass, various types of paving/hard surfaces, shrubs and even trees. Today, I’m referring to groundcovers as low, mat-forming or trailing plants, other than grasses or other plants that tolerate walking or mowing. Most groundcovers are not intended to be walked upon and will be severely damaged by pedestrian traffic.
