Last week I wrote about being eager for April 6 to come so sports could resume but now the unfortunate has happened and for the remainder of the school year high school sports have been canceled.
The State Board of Education did what was necessary to keep the health of students in mind, however, I am bummed for Stephens County area athletes including the Senior Class of 2020.
As I remember my final moments of high school, I remember a few of the plays that were ran. What crossed my mind the most though was the bus trips and spending time with my teammates.
In game memories will always be there but the time you spent with your teammates are the ones that define you.
Seeing some of the athletes and parents post about their season not being complete breaks my heart but a set of photos came out that showed me something even more important.
The album consisted of what ended up being the final home Duncan soccer game earlier this month and I saw the celebration between the boys team and Coach Fabian Lopez. Pictures are worth a thousand words and those are the memories you should remember as seniors.
I know it would have been great to take home a State Championship but the most important thing is to remember the times you had with your teammates.
While I have focused on the seniors a lot in this column I also need to mention the underclassmen who will be taking their next step when sports resumes.
In my freshman year our football team lost a senior class that had won two straight state championships, the first in our school’s history, and the team went on to continue playing as one unit.
During the months after the senior class took their last snaps those memories of how we competed in the offseason are some that I remember as well because we came together as a team.
For the underclassmen this is your time to shine. Remember what the seniors have left behind and make it better, even the spring sports that only had around two weeks to compete in 2020.
As the schools work through the distance learning atmosphere for the students, just know that whenever sports are back, The Duncan Banner and I look forward to covering the sporting events.
