McALESTER, Okla. — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has identified a man fatally shot by troopers following a Wednesday pursuit.

OHP Public Information Officer Sarah Stewart said 35-year-old Mark Anson Schoggins was fatally shot by troopers after a pursuit that ended at the intersection of South Third Street and South Avenue in McAlester.

“Shots were ultimately fired by patrol personnel and the driver of the fleeing vehicle was struck and pronounced dead,” Stewart said.

The reason why troopers fired their weapons at Schoggins was not able to be released Thursday.

OHP Troop Z is conducting the investigation and their findings will go to the District 18 District Attorney‘s Office to determine if the shooting was justified.

One trooper received minor injuries after being struck with shrapnel and was treated by medics on scene, Stewart said.

McAlester Police Capt. Don Hass said officers received a report Wednesday of a shoplifting that occurred at a local liquor store.

A pursuit then followed after officers engaged the suspect vehicle.

Stewart said OHP Troop D was notified of the pursuit heading south on U.S. 69. The pursuit traveled to the Indian Nation Turnpike when Schoggins turned around and traveled north toward McAlester in the southbound lane before the shooting incident, Stewart said.
