Oklahoma Main Street Center Executive Director Buffy Hughes presented the 20 Million Dollars Investment Award to Main Street Duncan Inc. during the Duncan City Council meeting Tuesday night.
“This is all about the money that has been put back into the Main Street district, as well as new businesses coming in,” Hughes said. “We also appreciate the city investing in Main Street.”
Hughes also presented an award to the city. Only a handful of Main Street communities in the state have earned the award, which is given in recognition of $20 million being reinvested in the downtown areas by businesses and private individuals.
Main Street Duncan Inc. has been reporting public and private investments made in the historic downtown Duncan district since 1986.
When improvements are made to buildings, properties and public spaces, Main Street Duncan charts the dollar amount spent.
The group tracks everything from building purchases to paint supplies, and this year, they reached the $20 million mark.
Duncan has one of the longest-running Main Street programs in the state, and for over 30 years, the organization has been working closely with the merchants and downtown property owners.
“We’re excited for this award,” Main Street Duncan Executive Director Destiny Ahlfenger said. “We hope to receive the 25 Million Dollar Investment Award by the end of this year.”
