A new track is in the works for Duncan High School following a Board of Education vote Tuesday evening.

Faced with two options from Vibra Whirl, the lowest bidder, the Board approved purchase of a latex track at a cost of $66,245. A polyurethane material was also considered, but at a cost nearly double that of the latex, and with no significant differences other than warranty length, the board thought it prudent to go with the cheapest option. Funding will come from insurance monies.

Jeff Myatt, Vibra Whirl representative, told the Board latex tends to break down faster due to weather, while polyurethane will hold up a little longer.

The current track has been in place for about seven years and has outlived its life, Sherry Labyer, Superintendent, said. Damages from last year’s flooding have also caused further deterioration.

“We have remedied the drainage problem so that should extend the life of the track,” Labyer told board members.

When work will begin on the project is not yet known.

In an item requiring no action, the Board recognized the boy’s and girl’s tennis teams for their accomplishments in Academic State competitions. The boy’s team took home the Academic State Champion title and the girl’s team was runner up for Academic State Championship.

In other business, the Board approved the following items from their agenda:

n Contracts to Alcohol and Drug Testing, Inc., for drug testing of bus drivers and students.

n Rehabilitation services renewed with Duncan Regional Hospital at a cost of $63 per hour in order to meet Individualized Education Plans requirements.

n Renewal of agreement between DPS and First Baptist Church for parking west of the old middle school.

n Continue professional development services with Info-Source/Title IIA 541 for $9,775.

n Contract with Youth Services to provide off campus counseling for DPS students in grades 7-12 who test positive for drugs at a cost of $100 for three sessions per student.
