A 19-year-old Tillman County man was fatally injured Saturday in what has been deemed an accidental shooting at a fast-food restaurant in Waurika.

According to Waurika Police Chief Earnest Tolle, 19-year-old Geoffrey Petty and three companions were passing through Waurika en route to Ardmore when they stopped at the restaurant shortly after noon.

While in the restaurant, Petty apparently was handling what Tolle described as a small-caliber handgun, which discharged. Petty was taken by Waurika Ambulance Service to Jefferson County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“The incident is consistent with an accidental shooting. It appears to have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Tolle said Sunday afternoon.

“I’m still investigating, but no charges are expected to be made at this time.”

In addition to Tolle and the Waurika EMS, an officer from Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troop G in Lawton and members of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department responded, as did a representative from the chief medical examiner’s office.
