Duncan Regional Hospital’s conference room came alive Friday with the sound of happy shoppers.

The hospital’s auxiliary hosted its bi-annual book fair as part of an ongoing effort to raise funds that benefit a variety of programs.

Shoppers could purchase an assortment of books, toys, music and more at discounts up to 70 percent.

Imagine Nation Books, a book display marketing company based out of Boulder, Colo., put on this year’s show.

“It’s always been a great success because it’s a good company,” said Betty Beck, DRH director of volunteer services.

This year’s fair met the goal set and was comparable to last year’s results, Beck said.

The auxiliary made a $200,000 pledge in 2006 to the DRH Health Foundation for the new cancer center, scheduled to open late spring 2008. The auxiliary has already donated $100,000 of that pledge money and book fair proceeds will help provide some of the remainder.

“Any proceeds that the auxiliary receives from the book fair will be used toward their donations for the cancer center,” Beck said.

“We have all kinds of projects and things we do to benefit the hospital,” she said.

Those “things” include providing scholarships, purchasing equipment for the hospital and donating money to projects such as the cancer center.

Volunteers drive the hospital shuttle, work at the information desk, staff the gift shop and work the various fundraisers the auxiliary puts on, among other things. There are about 125 active volunteers.

“They actually average about 1,500 hours a month in service that they give,” Beck said.

“We do appreciate greatly the support that we receive from the hospital and the community,” she said. “We couldn’t do it without the support.”

The auxiliary began with the inception of the hospital in 1977. It was formed in an effort to provide hospital support while linking the hospital with the community.

The next auxiliary fundraiser will be Holiday Happening, a Christmas open house, Nov. 11- 13.
