A group of touring trick hoops & alley oops, the Harlem Wizards, will be bringing their famous show to Marlow High School’s gym to benefit local charities and surroundings schools. Tickets went on sale this past Monday and have been selling really quickly.
Marlow Elementary School’s PTO group is the one that has been working on this event to make an appearance.
Kara Choate, Marlow Elementary PTO President, said this is the first time that the Harlem Wizards, who were formed in 1962, will be visiting Southwest Oklahoma and it has been a four year process.
“It is extremely hard to get on their schedule to begin with. I got to come personally down when I was a little girl and watch the Globetrotters in Duncan and that was something that stood out for me,” Choate said. “We wanted to do the same thing so I started that journey in looking and trying to get a date and this last year the rep I have been working with the last several years we came to a date.”
That date will be April 17 at Marlow New Gym and the Wizards will be bringing the Broadway group to the home of the Outlaws, but Choate is wanting this to represent all of the surrounding communities.
“This is something I want to do, not just for Marlow but as a community event. I made it to where that it is for the community,” Choate said. “It is not a ton but for every ticket sold when they buy them if they pick Duncan Public Schools, or they pick Velma-Alma or Empire, the Marlow PTO will give $1 back to that school for every ticket sold.”
Choate said that the schools they are hoping to reach are Marlow, Comanche, Duncan, Velma-Alma, Empire, Bray-Doyle, Central High and Rush Springs and they will also be giving portion of the funds raised to the Beautiful Day Foundation.
“I feel like yes we may all be about our good school rivalry, but if something ever happens in Stephens County we are all there as one community,” Choate said. “This is what I wanted to do and the other portion of our venue proceeds will go to Marlow PTO and Beautiful Day Foundation. This is so they can also give back to the schools that also help celebrate every single one of our children in the grade schools to have a Beautiful Day.”
The Broadway team of the Harlem Wizards will be playing the Marlow Blue Crew which will comprise of Marlow Faculty, administrators, coaches and some local celebrities.
Choate said the local celebrities that will be playing on the Blue Crew will be Marlow Mayor Brian Davis, State Representative Brad Boles and KSWO Sports Director Kyle Weatherly.
With tickets being sold currently, Choate said that they have 1700 tickets allotted in different categories with the court side tickets almost sold out as of press time.
The other tickets are reserved seating and general admission and Choate said she encourages people to buy tickets early so they don’t get left out of the experience.
Tickets for students will be $8, children three or under will be admitted to sit on a lap, $10 is the general admission price and reserved seating costs $16.
Court side is $30 but Choate said they only have one ticket left for that. Kids can also buy into a program called the Wiz Kid for an additional $45 along with any ticket to get a pre-order replica jersey and an experience to participate in pre-game warm-ups, grand entrance and group photo op with Wizards players. Military and Senior Discounts will also be will available for $9 with proper identification.
Choate said it has been a pleasure to work with this group to bring them to Marlow and the community.
“I have talked with them in detail about this and whether those kids can be a Wiz Kids because we are going to have some that can’t but those guys will not leave our gym until everyone that wants a picture or an autography will get one,” Choate said. “It was one of those things that we got it and ran with it and we are excited to bring this to the community.”
Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the tip-off for the game will be at 7 p.m. April 17 at Marlow New Gym located at 313 South 9th Street in Marlow.
