Gardentown took four acres of land that have previously been home to a used-car lot and video store and turned it into a lush, colorful oasis, right on U.S. Highway 81.
The garden center, located at 4650 U.S. 81, received the Community Improvement award at the Duncan Chamber of Commerce annual banquet for this feat.
Owner Jim Spurlock said the full-service garden center, which sells plants, rocks and various gardening supplies, outdoor decorations and care tools, said the business first opened in 1992.
“We bought a nursery in 1992,” Spurlock said. “We had a small greenhouse in Claridy Creek Mall.”
The business made the move to a facility near Stockman’s on U.S. Highway 81 in 1997.
Gardentown purchased the four acres the business currently sits on and calls home in 2013.
“We want to improve the appearance of Duncan and enhance the town,” Spurlock said.
The most recent move allowed 10 times more room for greenery, lawn-care items, outdoor decorations and more than the business previously had.
“We’re honored to receive the award,” Spurlock said.
He said he hopes his business continues to contribute to the beautification of Duncan.
