Fourteen young women stepped out onto the stage to compete, however, in the end, it was Shalyn Dawn Files who won the title of 2013 Miss Velma-Alma.
Files, 18, is a senior at Velma-Alma and the daughter of Shan and Starlet Files. Becoming Miss VA has been a longtime dream of hers and Friday night, it came true when she was crowned by 2012 Miss VA Shelby Rice.
“I’m ecstatic, it’s an honor to be joining this amazing group of ladies,” Files said. “It’s something I’ve looked forward to.”
She is involved with several in and out of school activities including softball, basketball, track, Student Council, the academic team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Beta club and the Comet Reading program. However, she has a humbling response when asked what she thinks set her apart from the other competitors.
“I really don’t know,” she said. “All the girls were so deserving and they’re all great.”
Files favorite part of the experience of the Miss Velma-Alma pageant, she said, was all of the long practices that lead up to the big night. The group of contestants worked hard to prepare for the pageant and even the backstage camaraderie is something Files said she will take with her to remember.
“We’re all really close,” she said. “We’re even closer now.”
All fourteen ladies were judged on stage presence, a sports wear outfit and an evening wear outfit. As the winner, Files will be a figure who represents both the school and student body.
Entertainment for the evening was provided by Brad Eason, Velma resident and the lead singer for Shady 5 Eighty, and Dave Carney, Duncan native and tour manager for Keith Urban.
“Keith Urban was on ‘American Idol’ last night and instead of being there guess where Carney’s at,” asked Eason. “Right here at the Miss Velma-Alma pageant.”
Other winners for the night were: Jordan Layn, First Runner-up and Miss Photogenic; Kylee Saville, Second Runner-up; Whitney Hall, Third Runner-up; Jesse Anderson, Fourth Runner-up; Lyndsie Carroll, Miss Congeniality; and L.L. Humphreys, Mr. Velma-Alma.
