This Saturday letter carriers in more than 190 cities in central and western Oklahoma will “Stamp Out Hunger” by collecting canned food donations from households on their routes.  In Stephens County donations benefit non-profits who have a partnership with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

Donations are needed more than ever to help provide food for families during the summer months when children no longer have access to school sponsored meals and utility bills are higher.

“Hunger is closer than you think,” said Steve Riggs, statewide chair of the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive.  “If you’ve seen one hungry child you’ve seen one too many.  Most of the clients served by the Regional Food Bank and its partner agencies, are children, seniors and the hardworking poor.”

To help “Stamp Out Hunger,” fill the plastic donation bag you receive in your mailbox this week, or any plastic bag, with canned food donations and place it by your mailbox on Saturday, May 13 before your letter carrier arrives.  Your letter carrier will do the rest.  Most needed items include: canned meats, meat-based soups, canned fruits, canned vegetables, peanut butter, and rice and beans. Christians Concerned also put a call out for diary products that don’t have to be refrigerated.

If your donation is missed, take it to your local post office.  Monetary donations can also be made online at feedinghope.org or by calling 405-600-3136.  Every dollar donated will provide five meals for Oklahomans with inconsistent access to food.

At least four Stephens County cities are participating, Central High, Comanche,  Duncan and Marlow.

Since 1993, the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive has raised more than 9.7 million pounds of food for residents in central and western Oklahoma.
