Two offices at Cameron University have joined forces to create a new program for students enrolling for the 2019-2020 academic year.

The Office of Admissions and Office of Alumni Relations created the Legacy Admissions Program, which was developed to benefit children and grandchildren of CU alumni.

“Oklahoma residents who qualify for the program will receive an application fee waiver and a housing waiver,” stated a press release. “Qualified non-Oklahoma residents, including international students, will receive the application fee waiver and a non-resident tuition waiver allowing them to pay in-state tuition. The program is available to full-time undergraduate students.”

Jerrett Phillips, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success, said the idea came from the alumni.

“As we talked with past Cameron University graduates, we heard about the amazing and life changing stories that occurred on our campuses,” said Phillips. “The Legacy Admissions Program provides the children and grandchildren of past graduates the same opportunity of a high quality academic experience delivered by caring faculty and staff.”

This will also help current students but is only for future terms and are not retroactive.

Another reason is the university is researched based.

“Research shows that students who live on campus have higher grade point averages and higher persistence rates, exhibit greater gains in intellectual and social development, are more likely to create their own peer support group outside of the classroom, and are more involved in activities in and outside of the classroom,” the release stated.

The university said to qualify for the program, prospective students must be the child or grandchild of a Cameron graduate, must meet full admissions standards, enroll full-time each semester, earn 30 college credits each academic year, and live in university housing for the duration of their Cameron experience.

“The program will provide a double room rate housing waiver for up to four years,” the release said. “The housing waiver may be applied to a single room in North or South Shepler or to the cost of a Cameron Village apartment.”
