The Oklahoma Baptist University’s Bison Glee Club will be in town and performing a free concert for the public.
The concert is at 6 p.m., Oct. 6, at First Baptist Duncan according to Ryan Johnson the Associate Pastor of Musical Worship.
“First Baptist Duncan is a part of the Southern Baptist Convention and Oklahoma Baptist University also belongs to the SBC,” he explained.
Johnson said there was a long tradition of great music from OBU.
“OBU and the Bison Glee Club have a rich history of producing many excellent musical worship pastors that have proceeded to serve churches all over the world,” he said.
The church got the honor thanks to Johnson being an alum.
“I personally had the pleasure of singing in the Bison Glee Club during my years at OBU,” Johnson said. “During these years I became friends with Dr. Chris Mathews — Current director of the group as well as the Dean of the Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts at OBU. I called Chris and asked him to privilege us by making us a part of the Bison Glee Club's fall tour. We are thrilled that they are coming.”
While it is a public music performance, the reason behind the music shouldn’t be forgotten.
“We don't typically host concerts, and we are very selective about the guests who’s concerts that we do host,” Johnson said. “Church music should never be about entertainment. Rather, it should be about worshiping the One True God who created us and saved Christians from our sin, and an eternity in Hell. Dr. Mathews and the Bison Glee Club are sure to do an excellent job singing theologically rich and musically brilliant songs in a variety of styles.”
