The Lions of Texas Entertainment will continue their Crapemyrtle Concert Series, presented by YS Asset Management, through a performance from an award winning country music artist who grew from rural lifestyle into a County Music Association (CMA) Male Vocalist of the Year.
Johnny Rodriguez will visit Duncan when he takes to the stage at 7 p.m. Feb. 8. Up and coming artist Matt Mercado will open for Rodriguez.
According to a bio with Lions of Entertainment, Rodriguez has had 16 number one hits.
“This iconic performer has been part of the heart and soul of Country music since he first hit the scene,” states Lions of Texas Entertainment.
The group calls Rodriguez a “true Hall of Famer and star” after the singer has moved up from Sabinal to “the top of the country music world.” Rodriguez’s debut album hit number one on all three major trade charts and in 1973, he took home the CMA’s Male Vocalist of the Year award.
Awards for Rodriguez didn’t stop there as he would also earn the Billboard Trend Setter Award “for being the first Mexican-American to capture a national audience.”
Classics by Rodriguez include “Pass Me By,” “You Always Come Back (To Hurting Me),” “Riding My Thumb to Mexico,” “That’s The Way Love Goes” and “Just Get Up And Close The Door.”
Since he started his career, Rodriguez has reportedly released 35 albums and charted 45 singles.
“This favored son of Texas has received standing ovations by audiences ranging from Ryman Auditorium to Carnegie Hall and has been honored with the presence of Presidents of the United States including Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and playing the Inaugural Ball for George Bush,” states Lions of Texas Entertainment. “He is also a member of the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.”
All shows will be performed at the Simmons Center in Duncan and tickets are available at the Simmons Center Box office and online at www.lionoftexas.com.
