CPR, firefighter training offered in Velma

DUNCAN — Velma emergency responders will teach life-saving CPR and first aid skills beginning Sunday.

Velma Emergency Management Director Patricia Snider and Firefighter Bill Trostle will teach the classes, which will be free except for a $3 card.

The classes will be held in Velma’s Emergency Management Services building at 808 Main St.

Snider said Velma Mayor Shawn Enloe called for the classes and she came up with a schedule of classes for six months.

“The CPR classes are for anyone,” she said. “The whole community can come learn CPR.”

Velma Town Clerk Jill Roberts said while Velma has held CPR classes in the past, this is the first time they’ve been held on a regular basis.

Roberts said there will be eight CPR dummies for the class, which will allow for up to 16 people per class.

“CPR is something anybody needs to know,” she said. “It’s a good skill to have.”

The Velma Fire Department also set a training schedule for the year, in areas ranging from how to handle wildland and structure fires to how to property extricate people from cars after a wreck.

Velma Firefighter Monte Tadlock said any firefighter who wants to attend the training sessions, provided by Oklahoma State University’s fire safety training program, can do so.

“The classes give us the knowledge and skills for structure fires,” he said. “Wildland and structure fires are different.”

Tadlock said the fire department is  working to establish a new protocol for training.

“It gives them a goal and standard to go  by,” he said.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
