Safety encouraged on the 4th

DUNCAN — The Duncan Police and Fire Departments encourage residents to enjoy their Fourth of July safely.

Duncan Police Master Officer Jeff Pollock said police will be working, watching for drunken driving and illegal shooting of fireworks in the city limits over the holiday.

“Pay attention to surroundings,” Pollock said. “Pop fireworks outside the city limits in a safe area.”

Duncan Deputy Fire Chief Dayton Burnside said it’s important to keep a safe distance from fireworks and set them off in an open field.

“It’s usually a busy time from fires started from improper use of fireworks,” Burnside said.

He also reminds locals to keep cool and hydrated in Oklahoma summer temperatures while having fun outdoors for the holiday.

Those who plan to cook out for the holiday should keep their grill out in the open, not in a covered area and keep cool, Burnside said.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
