10 students vying for Miss Velma-Alma title

VELMA — The 52nd annual Miss Velma-Alma Pageant will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday  in the Velma-Alma High School auditorium.  Ten young women are competing for this title. 

The pageant draws a standing-room-only crowd every year.

Emcees for the evening this year are two Velma-Alma High School graduates -- L.L. Humphreys and Miss Velma-Alma 2013 Shalyn Files.

The contestants will begin the competition on Friday afternoon with  personal interviews by a panel of judges.  The majority of the contestant’s points come from the interview portion of the competition.  During the evening performance, the contestants model both casual and evening wear.  Contestants will be escorted by four senior boys.  The escorts for this year’s pageant are Matthew McCalister, Colby Crowson, Trey Guthrie, and Alan Beck.  At the end of the night, Miss Photogenic and Mr. V-A will be selected, and Miss Velma-Alma 2014 will be crowned.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. The admission proceeds fund college scholarships that are given to the first through fourth-place finishers, said Melinda Childress, the school counselor who is organizing this year’s event.

The contestants are:

Jesse Lynn Anderson, 18-year-old daughter of Billy and Sherry Anderson.  Jesse is a senior at Velma-Alma.  She is active in Beta Club, FFA, softball, and golf.  After graduation, Jesse plans to attend OSU-OKC and pursue a degree in Veterinary Technology.  

Lyndsie Carroll, 18-year-old daughter of Nicky and Nancy Carroll and Jamie Carroll.  Lyndsie is a senior at Velma-Alma.  She is a member of FFA, Beta Club, National Honor Society, and the academic team.  After graduation Lyndsie plans to attend East Central University for two years then graduate from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Sonography.

Emily Combest, 17-year-old daughter of Scott and Jeanne Combest. Emily is a sophomore at Velma-Alma. She is a Student Council representative as well as a member of FCA, National Honor Society, and FFA.  Emily’s future plans are to attend East Central University and major in Early Childhood Education.

Pam Martine Hekerman, 18-year-old exchange student hosted by Jeff and Debbie Sanner. Pam is attending Velma-Alma as part of the USA 2013/2014 exchange student program. She is active in softball, basketball, track, Beta Club and FCA. Pam’s future plans are to return to the Netherlands in June and graduate. After graduation in her home country, Pam plans to study International Business and Management Studies in Breda.

Jordan Layn, 19-year-old daughter of James and Suzi Layn.  Jordan is a senior at Velma-Alma.  She is the 2014 Class Salutatorian, Student Council President, and is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, and the academic team.  After graduation, Jordan plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and major in Medical Speech-Language Pathology.  

Sidney Lewis, 19-year-old daughter of Mike and Misty Lewis.  Sidney is a senior at Velma-Alma. She is the 2014 Class Valedictorian, and is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, and the academic team. After graduation, Sidney plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and obtain a degree in Journalism.

Samantha Moore, 19-year-old daughter of Laura and Ronson Moore.  Samantha is a senior at Velma-Alma. She is active in Beta Club, FCA, Comet Yearbook, basketball, track, and academic team. After graduation, Samantha plans to attend Elite Cosmetology and work as a hairdresser while attending East Central University.

Teddi Eugenia Southerland, 17-year-old daughter of Ted Southerland and Crystal Brown.  Teddi is a senior at Velma-Alma.  She is active in basketball, softball, and is the 2014 Class Salutatorian, as well as a member of Beta Club, Oklahoma Honor Society, and National Honor Society.  After graduation, Teddi plans to attend East Central University and become a Physicians Assistant.

Kelcey Wright, 16-year-old daughter of Josh and Lori Bartling and Dennis Wright. Kelcey is a sophomore at Velma-Alma. She is active in cheerleading and Beta club. Kelcey also cheers competitively. After high school, Kelcey plans to attend East Central University where she will be a Tiger Cheerleader and become a 2nd grade teacher.

Nikki Wright, 17-year-old daughter of Stacey and Terri Wright. Nikki is a sophomore at Velma-Alma. She is active in softball and FFA. After high school, Nikki plans to attend OSU and see what the next chapter in her life holds.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
