Hour-long rainfall adds up to nearly an inch

DUNCAN — After receiving 0.38 of an inch of rain between Thursday night and Tuesday morning, a rain shower dropped nearly an inch of precipitation within an hour Tuesday afternoon.

The rainfall, which began around 1 p.m. Tuesday, added 0.99 of an inch to the rain received so far this year. This brings the May rain total up to 3 inches. For this month, the most rainfall received in a 24-hour period was 1.5 inches recorded May 8 by The Duncan Banner. Rainfall measured is submitted to the National Weather Service.

The added rainfall makes May the wettest month so far this year, topping April’s total of 2.57 inches. April had the wettest 24-hour period when it received 2.06 inches between 8 a.m. April 20 and 8 a.m. April 21.

With Tuesday’s rainfall, the total precipitation for the year increases to 7.82 inches. Despite the added rainfall, 2014 has still received less precipitation than 2013.

At the same time in 2013, Duncan had received 10.84 inches. May 2013 received 4.1 inches of rain.

National Weather Service said Duncan is expected to receive more rain Thursday, Friday and Saturday, although all chances are at 20 percent.
