'World's Largest Garage Sale' is back

DUNCAN — For the last seven years, the “World’s Largest Garage Sale” in Duncan has been like a ghost ship on the high seas.

There’s nobody at the helm, yet the ship stays afloat and just keeps bobbing along, refusing to sink.

“I know it’s kind of odd,” says Sandy Stewart of the Duncan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

During a long-ago administration at City Hall, the chamber was essentially told to organize the event, at least to the extent of seeing that all the “Garage Sale” signs were picked up after it was over, Stewart said.

When Jim Frieda assumed the city manager’s position, those marching orders were no longer intact, yet the World’s Largest Garage Sale still happened every year on the third weekend of July, Stewart said.

While the Chamber of Commerce has no official role in the event, it is happy to answer phone calls and confirm that, yes, the garage sale will still occur Friday and Saturday.

For years, the chamber held a simultaneous “Summerfest” at Fuqua Park, featuring live music, vendors and other amusements, including a pie eating contest.

But attendance was so dismal last year, apparently because of the intense heat, and  vendors who showed up to try to make a buck were so disappointed, that the whole thing was called off this year.

But the Worlds Largest Garage Sale goes on, all over town, as does a similar event in Marlow known as “Second Chance Trade Days,” because there seemingly is a plentiful supply of people who want to make a little money off the things they no longer want or need, as well as plenty of people willing to buy it -- for the right price.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
